According to the report released this month by the State of Alaska, 45% of abortions in Alaska are paid for by state medicaid dollars (federal dollars are prohibited from being used for abortion in most cases).
When the legislature has authorized funding for medicaid dollars in the past, Republicans have typically used it as an opportunity to put forward an amendment giving lip service to the pro-life cause.
Republican legislators initially celebrated passage of that amendment last year, but were then nowhere to be found when it came time to implement what they had passed. The feckless amendment received heat from writers all across the political spectrum; so much so that legislators didn’t even pretend to limit abortion funding in tonight’s supplemental.
